Roberto Martinez says that Manchester City should not consider signing James McCarthy
Roberto Martinez says that Manchester City should not consider signing James McCarthy since the midfielder is not for sale at any price.
The Irish midfielder has been subjected to transfer rumours linking him with City amongst other clubs. City are understood to be very keen on signing home-grown talent in order to increase their home-grown player’s quota. They have already brought in Raheem Sterling from Liverpool for a mammoth £ 49 million. McCarthy has come through several lower league outfit before establishing himself as a top player in the Premier League. Despite the disappointing season for Everton last time around, McCarthy was one of their important players.
He was brought in by Martinez for £ 13 million from his former club Wigan Athletic. It was under the leadership of Martinez that McCarthy grew as a player. It was not surprising that he decided to join hands with the Spaniard once again. Now, though, the chance to join a top club like City will prove extremely mouthwatering for the player. He has not yet spoken about the transfer rumours, which in itself is an indication that he would be interested in speaking with City. Everton are currently in their pre-season tour and Martinez will want no speculation just weeks ahead of the season opener.
“He’s not for sale. My responsibility is to bring competition into the squad and we have strong competition for places. We don’t want to lose that. We’re not in a position where we have to sell to balance the books and want to create a winning team.James McCarthy is a top performer. He has shown that over recent years. We know what he brings with young legs and good energy. He’s a vital part of our squad,” said Martinez, who will also aim to keep Jones Stones from joining Chelsea.
